Getting around Concord
Concord has two BART stations: Concord, near downtown, and North Concord/Martinez on Port Chicago Highway. Both are on BART's Antioch to SFO/Millbrae line. By car, Interstate 680 and Highway 4 connect you to Walnut Creek, the Tri-Valley, East County and beyond. If you'll commute by train, compare homes by walking or biking time to the station, not just miles.
Homes and costs to know
Housing types. Concord has a broad mix: single-family homes from many decades, townhomes, condos and apartments, with more condo and townhome options closer to downtown and BART. Condition varies from street to street, so a careful inspection matters. Most of the city is served by Mt. Diablo USD; always confirm school assignment for a specific address with the district.
Transfer tax. The Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder charges a documentary transfer tax of $0.55 per $500 of value ($1.10 per $1,000). The Recorder lists only Richmond and El Cerrito as cities with an extra city transfer tax, so a Concord sale typically has the county tax only. Your escrow officer confirms the final figures.
First-time buyer help. As reported in May 2026, the City of Concord offers a First Time Home Buyer program run with the Bay Area Affordable Homeownership Alliance (BAAHA), with up to $60,000 for eligible low- to moderate-income buyers purchasing in Concord. Homebuyer education is required. Statewide, CalHFA's MyHome Assistance Program can help with down payment or closing costs. Funding rounds open and close, so check current availability. See Karla's guide to first-time buyer programs and down payment help.
